In their search for forwarding partners to transport their one-of-a-kind work of art safely from Bregenzerwald to New York, architects Oskar Leo Kaufmann and Albert Rüf approached Hämmerle Spezialtransporte first. Reinhard Hämmerle then got GW involved: "I think of GW as a partner I can trust and who offers my customers a global network with high quality standards," Hämmerle explains his decision. Architect Oskar Leo Kaufmann relates what was important for him in choosing a forwarding partner. "We need partners who are 100% dependable. SYSTEM 3 is a pioneer in the field of modular construction systems. It enabled us to compete successfully against 400 other contenders and, beginning on 20 June, we will be exhibiting our work in New York for three months,” says Kaufmann. It is an honour for him and his partner Albert Rüf to receive an invitation from the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) to present their piece in the "Home Delivery" exhibition. The 3-month event is considered to be one of the most important architectural exhibitions of the year. Founded on trust Safe route Hämmerle Spezialtransporte The Gebrüder Weiss Corporation
SYSTEM 3’s modular concept makes it possible to modify and expand buildings retroactively. Wood is the main element of the individual modules. The prototype was built in Reuthe (Bregenzerwald) and will be exhibited in full size in Manhattan. ”Of course, what we'd like most is to bring the piece to New York ourselves,” Albert Rüf reveals, "but luckily there are specialists available to take care of the transport. We have enlisted the very best to transport our prototype.” Trust played the greatest role in their decision. According to them, Hämmerle Spezialtransporte and Gebrüder Weiss are cut from the same cloth. The architects feel that their forwarding partners complement each other ideally: Hämmerle is an expert in special transports and GW is an overseas expert with a global network. The fact that both companies have their roots in Vorarlberg was an added bonus.
The road to the art metropolis of New York begins in Reuthe. Here Hämmerle Spezialtransporte loads the individual modules for the house into two 40-foot special containers with a removable steel roof, also known as open top containers. In the Port of Bremen the containers are loaded onto a ship scheduled to sail to New York in 11 days time. The location of both containers on the ship itself was important. "To ensure that no parts of the individual elements become warped, both containers need to be in the middle of the ship because this is where temperatures fluctuate least,” explains Michael Kramer, GW Sea Freight Manager.
Air & Sea Terminal Wolfurt. "As soon as the containers arrive in New York, we are responsible for their safe transport to the Museum of Modern Art in cooperation with our New York office,” continues Kramer. "On every transport assignment, we know how important our services are for our customers. I think this awareness is what sets GW apart from the rest. Our customers can depend on us and the global GW network.”
The "Home Delivery 2008 – Fabricating the Modern Dwelling” exhibition will take place from 20 July to 20 October.
